Will the PlayStation 3 game system rescue Sony?

As the Christmas season comes closer the unveiling of better, more extreme, and definitely more expensive gifts gives rise to the release of the Sony PlayStation 3. Sony, which formally held seventy percent of the gaming market, is now struggling to make a comeback with this new game console while fighting against its rivals once again. But with the high price of five hundred to six hundred dollars per game it certainly limits those who are able to make the purchase. It is a lot of money to spend on a child’s toy. Besides the other new game consoles that are coming out in time for Christmas are half the price, which makes for some pretty steep competition.

One of the problems is that Sony is trying hard to bring their Blu-ray optical technology to the forefront by using it in the PS3 without looking at the consequences of using this more expensive technology. This is Sony’s big play, they want to not only sell their newest game console but they want almost as much to be able to promote their Blu-Ray technology. The problem is that this technology is competing against the high-definition technology that is less expensive to manufacture and has already become a more acceptable format.

It is predicted that the PlayStation 3 will make no profit for at least the first couple of years that it is out. This is because, despite the excessively high price for the console, it will take years to pay off the costs of research and development that went into making the PS3. The only profit that will be made will be based on the sale of games. This worries many as the first weeks sales showed only one game being bought per PS3 sold. There are only six new games issued so far for the play station 3 and the gamers are not happy about this either.  But with the high cost of these new games, likely sixty to eighty dollars a piece, it will take a while before gamers want to own too them all.

The hope is that Sony PlayStation 3 will rescue Sony from its slump and sustain the company and its game makers for the next decade. This bet is being made on the fact that PS3 does have advanced technology and that their new computer chip will be so impressive that the public will be prepared to pay the higher price for the advanced graphics. The reviews are saying that the graphics are so clear that they are almost movie like in quality. This is being touted as the most authentic adventure for gamers to hit the market yet.
