Making a statement with the Sony PS3
The image was one of the weirder images in the annals of pop culture. A man stood in line for hours. He woke up early in the morning and stood out in line, not for a couple of hours, but for a couple of days! The lines grew larger and larger as people were dying to get their hands on the Sony PlayStation 3. There was a great deal of anticipation in regards to the release of the Sony PS3 as the heralding of the arrival of the gaming system was in the news for several days (if not weeks) prior to the release date of the gaming system.
So, finally the Sony PS3 arrived in stores. Some people did purchase the game system unit in bulk, although not in the amount that people would have been happy with. In other words, demand had exceeded availability so there were going to be quite a number of people who were going to have to walk away from the line they stood in rather unhappy. There simply would not be enough Sony PS3 systems for sale in order to fit all the people who were desiring to own a system. The strange man mentioned earlier was one of the luckier people in line that day as he successfully acquired a Sony PS3 to the chagrin of all those who stood in line behind him. They were out of luck as the store had sold out of all available Sony PS3 systems and they were not exactly thrilled that they were going to have to come back another day to fill their need to satiate a Sony PS3 fix. Then, imagine their horror when the strange man did what he did. He took his Sony PlayStation 3 system and proceeded to smash it with a sledgehammer.
It was a weird assault on pop culture and consumer mentality, but it was absurd enough that it would air on national and international news outlets in front of millions. The sheer strangeness of a man DESTROYING a Sony PS3 for not apparent reason other than he desired to be an iconoclast and make a statement. Sure, it was a very silly statement and, at the same time, quite a waste of money not to mention a waste of a good Sony PS3! However, if nothing else, such a strange display provided the makers of the Sony PlayStation 3 system with more free publicity than it could have ever mattered.
Regardless, the weird person who did this act of anti Sony PS3 defiance will probably become a footnote in the history of gaming entertainment systems, but for those who are hardcore fans of the gaming system, he will probably find a few chapters dedicated to him in the retrospective books on the Sony PS3 that may start appearing in twenty years.
